National Association of Peer Support for Nurses

NAPSN is a National peer support organization for nurses run by nurses.

About

Nurses at risk for substance use disorder

The American Nurses Association (ANA) estimates that six to eight percent of nurses use alcohol or drugs to an extent that is sufficient to impair professional performance. Others estimate that nurses generally misuse drugs and alcohol at nearly the same rate (10 to 15 percent) as the rest of the population. That means that if you work with 10 nurses, one of them is likely to be struggling with a substance use disorder (NCSBN 2011).

How does NAPSN help?

NAPSN empowers those who support nurses. We coordinate resources, assist in program development, and advocate for a nation where all nurses have access to compassionate and judgment-free peer support.

NAPSN is currently hosted by Wisconsin Peer Alliance for Nurses, WisPAN

Our Mission

To be the leading national resource for nursing peer support by providing a forum for the collection of best practices while embracing a compassionate balance of well-being for nurses and promoting public safety.

  • Assist in the development of quality peer support programs.
  • Share resources, including availability of current peer support programs.

Our Vision

To be the national voice of nursing peer support to shape a stigma-free nursing profession built on access to resources across all states and a culture of recovery, compassion, resilience, and accountability.

I am a nurse and a person in recovery. I lost almost everything to my substance use. I stole drugs from the hospital where I worked. But that is only the beginning. My recovery is the real story.
