The Wisconsin Peer Alliance for Nurses (WisPAN) works with healthcare organizations and nursing leaders to connect existing wellness efforts with independent, peer-led support. Together, we can make confidential resources easier to find, reduce stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorder, and help more nurses remain healthy and supported in the profession.
WisPAN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by nurses in recovery.
The Problem
Burnout and distress affect care
High stress, moral injury, and mental health challenges can affect patient care, increase absenteeism, reduce productivity, and drive nurses from the workforce.
Delayed help can threaten careers
Fear of disciplinary action or board reporting can keep nurses from seeking help before a mental health or substance use challenge reaches a crisis.
Turnover is expensive
The average cost of turnover for a bedside RN is more than $60,000.
Existing support is underused
Nurses may hesitate to use employer-based support because of stigma and concerns about confidentiality or professional consequences.

Peer Support
Nurses Caring for Nurses
WisPAN can work with Shared Governance or Nursing Wellness committees to add the NCN repository to a hospital intranet or nurse residency portal.
Education & Consultation
WisPAN offers workshops and presentations for frontline staff and leadership to reduce stigma around mental health and substance use disorder (SUD).
Earn 1 nursing continuing education credit.
Internal Program Development
WisPAN offers dedicated leadership coaching and consultation, support for diversion policies, nurse-manager training, and help developing internal peer support programs.
